Why Are Young Living Oils Better?

image
A sign at the Mona, Utah Young Living Farm

I recently was asked this and I wanted to share with you guys what I found in my research and my own opinion on this question.  Essential oils are a commodity in this world like any other item that is sold to the public.  You will have the good, the bad and the ugly.  Most of the time it is good.  I will never claim that other essential oil companies don’t have good oils.  What I will claim is that Young Living will ALWAYS have good oils.  That my friends, is the difference and why I am a Young Living member and continue to buy their oils.  Trust is a huge thing for me and I never have to worry about the quality of their oils.  With that said, lets get to the story I want to tell you today.

When a plant is distilled for an essential oil there are different avenues a distiller can take to get it to market.  If they distill at high heat and quick time they will get more oil from the plant faster.  This is great for volume.  But it horrible for preserving the therapeutic compounds of the oil.  Most plants need to be distilled at LOW temperatures for a longer distill time to get all the therapeutic compounds out of the plant.  But if the distiller doesn’t care about that but just wants volume than yes, it is 100% oil, but it is not the same quality as an oil that has been distilled at the proper temperature.

Also, this same plant may have different varieties that give different healing properties, which in turn also changes the price. Lavender is a great example.  Most companies will use “Lavandin” in their Lavender oil or blends as it is cheaper.  However, “Lavender Angustifolia” is what is considered “true” Lavender and which has the most healing properties.  It is also a traditionally lower yielding plant.  “Lavandin” is a Lavender plant that has higher yields but different therapeutic qualities.  For example, Lavender Angustifolia will heal burns.  Lavandin will not due to its higher camphor content than can actually make burns worse.  Essential oil bottles should say the name of the plant on the bottle.  Look at this next time you purchase Lavender.  You will want Lavender Angustifolia if you are looking to put on your skin.  Lavandin is fine for perfume or linens.  Not the best for your skin.

Almost all essential oil batches are bought by big brokers in the market. They in turn take those batches of oil and divide them to sell to different markets.  They may take lavender oil, lace it with synthetics to improve fragrance and yield, label it “Perfume” grade and sell to the big fragrance companies worldwide.  Or a broker may take the lavender oil, add an odorless solvent to increase yield, and sell is to unsuspecting companies that then bottle and sell their “100%” essential oil” to consumers.

You have to remember essential oils are NOT regulated by the FDA.  So there is no standardized testing.  No one is testing all these companies and their bottles of oil. To be honest this is a gray area in the essential oil world.  Companies can get away with labeling a product as 100% even if it is not because who is checking?!?

Now I am not saying every essential oil out there is bad except Young Living. I am sure they are many companies out there with good hearts trying to get the best product they can to the customer.  The truth is though that most of these companies are NOT testing their oils prior to bottling and selling.  They are trusting their brokers and trusting their suppliers that what they are getting is the real thing.

What sets Young Living apart and why I trust them and pay the money for them is that they control the entire process from literally the seed that is planted in the ground to how it is distilled and bottled.  They also test every batch of oil before they bottle to ensure the oil is what it says it is. They actually own their own farms (Gary Young grew up as a farmer and trained in the Lavender fields in France. How many essential oil companies can claim that?)  Young Living grows their plants organically, and then distills them right there on the farm where they can control the distillation time and temperature.  On the oils they have to purchase from outside their farms, they have staff onsite to watch the distill and packaging of oils and then they test it in their and outside labs to ensure it is what they say it is.  Most companies don’t do these extra steps.  It is time consuming and it costs money.

Whatever company you use, be sure to read that label carefully and even e-mail the company to see where they actually buy their oils from. Do they use brokers? Do they own farms? Do they test the oils before bottling?

I hope this has helped clarify things for you.  Young Living is the leader in essential oils and is what I trust to use on myself and my family.   If you are ready to purchase and see for yourself how wonderful essential oils are, please click here for more info and to purchase.

Thieves Essential Oil Blend

Hi friends! It’s October, which means it’s quite possibly the most beautiful month of the year, in every area, colors, smells, temperature, etc. It doesn’t get much better than October. It does also mean the start of cold and flu season. This past month friends around me have already dealt with hand, foot and mouth disease and possibly strep. So… this post we are going to focus on THIEVES! Most of you probably know how amazing Thieves is but in case you don’t, or in case you’ve forgotten, I’m going to remind you!

thieves

So what kinda name is Thieves for an essential oil? Well, let’s start with a bit of a history lesson.

While there are a few versions of the story they all center around one event, the Bubonic Plague. It is said that, during that time, four thieves went from house to house to rob those who had succumbed to the illness. After the thieves were captured and tried for their acts of robbery, a judge offered leniency if they would share how they were able to be around those afflicted long and often enough to rob them but not be affected by the illness. It’s interesting to note here that, during this time of the plague striking Europe, physicians were seen wearing long black robes, wide brimmed hats, and masks that appeared to have a beak. The reason for doing this is that the masks were said to have contained a combination of herbs, spices, and essential oils that the physicians would breathe in order to keep themselves safe from those afflicted with the illness. Their long black robes were also said to be doused in a similar fragrant concoction and current research continues to build upon this theory. Pretty cool, right?

Thieves essential oil

Thieves is a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils for an aromatic blend that fills any space with a rich, spicy aroma. Thieves is one of Young Living’s most popular products.  There is a whole product line using this oil blend.  Everything from Laundry Detergent to Hand Soap.  It is a great way to go chemical free in your home while still protecting your family from the “icky’s.”

Thieves put to the test

So Weber State University conducted a study in 1997.  The results showed Thieves Oil to have a 99.96% success rate against airborne bacteria.  The bacteria cultures were exposed in an enclosed area and the Thieves Essential Oils blend was infused into the space.  Within 10 minutes of exposure there was a reduction of:

82% in Micrococcus luteus (bacteria found in water, soil, dust & air)
96% in Pseudomonas aeruginosa (sepsis)
44% in Staphylococcus aureus (staph)

Amazing, right?!?  Diffuse this blend in your home everyday to keep your air “fresh.”

Young Living Mona, Utah Farm Visit

My husband was in Utah last week for business and decided to make a visit to the Mona, Utah Young Living farm!  I didn’t believe him till he video called me at the farm! I was so jealous as I have not been there yet.  But he did bring me back some wonderful gifts, including fresh dried Lavender, so I can’t be too mad at him….lol

image
Fresh Dried Lavender…mmm

The farm is open to visitors year round.  You don’t need an appointment (except for the distillery tour – it pays to call ahead), and there is a gift shop on property.  Brian even got to try Lavender infused ice cream!

Since he didn’t plan ahead, he was unsure if he could get a distillery tour.  But he came across a woman who was so nice and offered to give him a tour right then!  Being a chemist, he was fascinated with their distillation methods, equipment and filtration room.  She even showed him the lab room!  He was impressed how impeccably clean everything was and how good condition the grounds were in.  And everyone was so nice he said.  It is definitely worth visiting and seeing first hand the seed to seal process in action.

Some fun facts about the Mona Farm:

-The farm includes nearly 1,600 acres and is home to the largest privately owned essential oil distillery in the world.

– It has been serving the local and Young Living communities since 1995.

– Many different plants are harvested here, both to be distilled into pure essential oils for our members and for botanical research.

– Lavender, Hyssop, Clary Sage, Peppermint, Goldenrod and Einkorn are the main crops grown here.

-All Young Living farms practice organic farming. No chemical fertilizers, no pesticides, even weeding is done by hand!

Just Put on Your Damn Swimsuit

Recently I have been seeing a lot about body positivity on Facebook, Instagram and various news outlets.  It seems like Millennials especially are embracing the movement and plus size models are becoming more mainstream. Fat is now a thing apparently.

I have almost always been overweight. As a teenager it was awful because back then in the “old” days of the early 1990’s, there just wasn’t that many clothing options for teenagers past the size of 10 (Remember the store 5-7-9?  Yeah, I never could shop there either).  I would go to the mall and stare forlornly at the “junior” stores as I headed into Lane Bryant to try and find something that didn’t look like my mom would wear it.

In college I lost a bunch of weight and for a short while got to shop at all those stores that I used to have to pass. It was fun.  But I was hungry. A lot.  And dating still sucked. Did I mention I was hungry a lot?

As the years passed and I got married and settled in to office cubicle life my waistline grew. Now at the age of 37 I am firmly in the “plus” camp.  And after having a baby my body also is no longer, ahem, “youthful.”

Do I wish I could have a supermodel bod with a non-appetite? Sure. But this is me.  All size 16/18 of it.  My weight fluctuates a little but I know I will never be a size 4.  Even in my “thin” days I was a size 8. Does this mean I am a sloth who does nothing but eat? No.  I am always trying to workout and move more.  But I also am living and have decided not to be tied to the number on the scale anymore.  Whether I am thin or fat I am still a person.  Living my life and I deserve to be happy and loved as I am.

I have been living my own body positivity movement for the past 10 years.

I had a friend post recently that she is afraid to put on a swimsuit this summer. She doesn’t like her thighs. What?  People, she is thinner than me.  She is gorgeous.  She is the person you want to see at the beach with a swimsuit on. Yet she is afraid of her body.

I want to tell all of you out there right now – Put on your damn swimsuit and swim! Run, skip and jump. And “gasp” put on a pair of shorts! Who cares if your thighs rub together or you have cellulite.  When it is 90 degrees outside the people around you are just thinking about getting to the closest air conditioned room, not the size of your thigh gap.

I will admit I used to be afraid of shorts. But then I moved to Florida.  Where you sweat in the shade.  Now I have a drawer overflowing with shorts.  And guess what? No one ever has said anything about my thighs.  There are so many clothing choices out there today.  And online shopping has made plus sizes more accessible than ever.  Treat yourself to some cute summer things and WEAR THEM.

Have your own body positivity movement. Life is too short not to wear shorts.

Acupuncture and Life Balance

Two days ago I got acupuncture again. I had gone 3 years ago to see if it would help my infertility and crazy hormone issues.  After 8 weeks of treatment I stopped going but got pregnant soon after.  Coincidence?  Maybe.  But I had never felt so “balanced” emotionally and physically and I am sure that helped get me pregnant.  And after 5 years of never getting that magic pregnancy line I sure wasn’t going to complain!

So when I developed Carpal Tunnel type pain during pregnancy and it still didn’t go away after birth and after trying wrist braces, exercises, rest, etc. I went to my acupuncture lady.   One treatment and the pain went away and never came back.  I so wish I would have seen her sooner instead of wasting so many months dealing with the pain.

Lately I feel like my hormones are all over the place again. My cycles are spacing apart.  My skin is crazy.  Ever since I gave birth I feel like I am one hormone away from losing it.  That or it is the lack of sleep and the fact that the bottom of my purse is now a garbage dump of half eaten goldfish crackers.  Either way I feel unsettled. Unbalanced.

So this week as I laid on a table with needles poking from every limb while trying to not think about that fact, I tried to meditate on why I am feeling so crazy lately. I remember feeling free and unstoppable.  Youth does that to you.  When you are 20 the responsibilities of adulthood feel so far away.  I didn’t think past that weekend.  That summer.  And what summers they were…..  But now? At 37 with all the responsibilities of job and home and never ending bills…..it is enough to just give in and say “this is it.”

And as a mom to a young toddler I feel like there are a lot of expectations that you are now supposed to be just a mom. Your dreams and ambitions go on the backburner.  Your life is their life.  Maybe it is my mom guilt that makes me perceive this but I am just trying to balance everything the best I can.  Being a mom is harder than I thought it would be.  You constantly feel like you are not doing enough yet feel pulled in every direction.  And as much as part of me would love to stay home all day with him the reality is I also like having a “life” outside of being a mom.  Of interacting with adults and knowing TV shows other than Bubble Guppies. I didn’t get a college degree just for the hell of it.  But since I graduated – 15 years ago! – I have yet to find my way, my calling.  These are the thoughts bouncing around my mind while I laid there.

I love this quote as it pretty much sums up what I need to do right now.

“Be Addicted to the Feeling of Having your Shit Together.”

Now if I could only figure out how. Maybe next week’s session will uncover that…..

All things in moderation…..

So last year I got in on the essential oil bandwagon. I love them.  I really do.  I now have things in my home like all natural laundry detergent and natural hand soap that have essential oils in it.  I have roller balls of essential oil blends that I wear as perfume or for help with everyday aches and pains. I have an awesome homemade muscle rub cream that I swear melts away my neck tension every night.  But I am also living modern life.  I am a working mom who eats things like Orange Chicken (so delicious) from Panda Express for lunch.  I let my son do things like drink water from the garden hose or eat day old cheerios off the floor.  I also still have a medicine cabinet filled with things like Tylenol and Claritin because you just never know when you will need them.

When I decided to start this website last summer it was to be an outlet for me to write about my new role as a mom and explore this new world of essential oils I was excited about. It was also a creative outlet for me as I grieved the sudden loss of my mom last summer.  And over the past year I have been feeling more comfortable in everything. My son is going to be two in a few weeks and I still love my essential oils.  I also can think about my mom now without dissolving into a pile of grief.  It has been a good year.

But….

There are so many fanatics out there on both the essential oil AND motherhood front.   Sometimes I want to shout, “REALLY?  You really did power yoga, cooked an organic breakfast AND magically healed your sick child from one application of essential oils all before 9 AM?”

The reality of life is that sometimes you feel like super mom and other days you just survive till the kids go to bed. Essential oils have supported my family in an amazing way this year and I love them.  But I also will still take my child to the doctor if he gets really sick.

It is called moderation people. In the end, we are all just trying to make the best decisions for our family while trying to fulfill our dreams and ambitions at the same time.

Now excuse me as I get my 3rd cup of coffee for the day.  It is Friday after all and I am running on fumes at this point.  Moderation in the caffeine department can start tomorrow…

A Day in My Oily Life

Good morning! I thought it would be fun to invite you into my home and show you my typical oil routine. First up -Coffee!! And as I wait for my cup to brew I roll on my wrists some highest potential.

It is a blend of oils that sets my intention for the day. It combines the uplifting and inspirational qualities of Australian Blue with the power of Gathering to help bring greater unity of purpose. Jasmine is added to enhance self-confidence, while ylang ylang calms, soothes, and harmonizes.

Throughout the day it is my reminder to reach higher and think positive. I put a roller filament on the bottle so I just roll on my wrists and neck. I swear I have an extra spring in my step when I use this oil.

Theives Spray

Who else out there has a love/hate relationship with the diaper pail? Lol. To cut down on the smell (and kill germs) when changing out liners I always spray down with the thieves spray. Awesome smell and I love that is all natural and don’t have to worry if Bryces hands go all over this diaper pail later in the day when he decides he wants to throw out his own diaper.  This spray is also great for shopping carts, toilet seats, airplane trays, TV remotes….anywhere there are germs!

Mojito Blend

Hands down my favorite diffuser combo. Peppermint and Lime. Reminds me of mojitos and summer. Try it next time and see for yourself!  I love diffusing my essential oils to make the whole house smell yummy while also benefiting from the aromatherapy.

IMG_2260

Coming in from outside and washing our hands. I LOVE the thieves foaming hand soap. All natural, smells great and isn’t Bryce adorable? Lol. I am lucky that he likes to wash his hands. Even if it means him playing with the faucet for the next 5 minutes. The best part of this hand soap is it is all plant based ingredients and you can purchase a large refill jug that makes it cost effective and is environmentally friendly.

Kid Boo Boo

Bryce fell when he was outside so I used this great rollerball combo on him cleanse and protect the scrap he got on his knee.  This rollerball is so easy to make. Take a glass roller bottle and put 10 drops each lavender and purification or tea tree. Then Just put a little carrier oil in like grape seed to help oils spread when applied. Voila! Diy boo boo stick great for kids but I use all the time too. So convenient!

WorkOut

I have been trying to keep my New Years Resolution to move more and eat less.  I bought the Active and Fit Kit Young Living sells and LOVE both these products. The Cool Azul Sports Gel has 10% essential oils in it and the first ingredient in it is Aloe, making this product moisturizing as well as super cooling to your aching muscles and joints. And the Deep Relief oil works great as an “Icy Hot” type product.  One of my good friends just ran a half marathon and the next day she had no soreness! She swears these products helped her immensely recover from the run.

Lime

Need I say more? A great combo.  Also try adding a few drops of Lime Essential Oil into your fajita’s or Key Lime Pie recipes next time you make them.

Skin Care

My new anti-aging combo.  Frankincense essential oil has helped keep my complexion clear, reducing my age spots and overall giving me a natural “glow.” I mix it with Maracuja Oil, which I love for its lightweight moisturizing properties. Living in Florida my skin doesn’t handle well heavy moisturizers. I find this combo to be working great for me currently.

IMG_2259

Ahhh….Bedtime. I love to put two drops of Valor on my feet before bed. It really helps my mind “shut” down and go to sleep. Thank you for following along with my day and I would love to hear what essential oils you must have in your “oily” day.

If you have not purchased essential oils and are interested in doing so, I recommend the starter kit. It comes with 11 essential oils PLUS a diffuser of your choice. Click here to learn more and purchase!

That Runners High

Seriously. Can I be honest with you? I don’t get that “runners high” so many people chase by logging mile after mile running.  I actually hate working out in general.  I hate giving up carbs and sugar.  I love glasses of wine and big dinners.  I love Chick-Fil-A.   And I really love these things called Snicker bars.  But my weight is the highest it has ever been.  My energy levels?  Let’s just say I could fall asleep when Jeopardy is on TV.  I let my baby and work be the excuses not to do anything about it last year but this year it has to stop.  So I have started walking lots of miles.  I eat less “shudder” carbs.  And I am drinking less wine.

And this week? I ran. Almost a mile straight.  I thought I would pass out and my legs felt like jelly, but tomorrow I will do it again.  I am going to do it not because I get that runners high but because I want to smile when I see photos of myself  or pass a mirror.  I want to be able to keep up with my active son.  I want to like me more and I like me better when I try harder.

I realized if I am going to be a health and wellness advocate I need to physically be a better billboard! I am pretty sure that the run down, squeeze into outfits, can’t keep up with my toddler me is not the appearance I want to give off to others.  Nor is it how I want to be. I let denial rule me for so long but no longer!

The struggle is real though. There have been days this past month when working out didn’t happen. Or the Snickers bar magically appeared in my mouth somehow.  But I am not giving up.  So here is to month two:  Let’s do this!  Here is to trying harder and chasing that mythical runners high.

Exactly What I Needed

This weekend was exactly what I needed. I started January 1st with the phrase “highest potential.”  That is my 2016 resolution. To strive for my highest potential. I love this quote I read recently from Oprah Winfrey:

“Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life, because you become what you believe. ” So true. So difficult to do. This is what I am working this year to do. Create my vision.

After I had Bryce I became an extension of him. His needs were my needs, and his schedule was my schedule. I got lost in the exhaustion and work of baby. I thought it would get better when he turned one. But it didn’t. And then my mom died in July.  Oh did I bury the grief. I just couldn’t deal with it. Too much pain. And this fall I paid for it. Summer turned to fall, and I realized I was lost. Lost as a mom, lost as a wife, lost as a worker. And tired. So so so tired. My health had taken a major nosedive when I became a mother. I wasn’t taking care of myself. I was getting sick all the time. My weight was creeping up. I was getting tired just going up the stairs. I excused it with I was a new mother and just didn’t have time.  But my baby is now a toddler. I was running out of excuses. And eventually I would have to deal with my emotions from mom’s death.

This weekend I had a come to reality check. I became honest with myself. Which we all know is about as easy as watching money grow on trees. Why is change so hard? Why is seeing yourself honestly so scary?

Basically I have decided that I have got to put myself first. Take care of my health, take care of my relationships. But most importantly create my “vision.” So I started working out this weekend. Gave up sugar (so hard!!) and I am committing to reaching my goals. There is many more checks on my list but you get the gist.

It is time to hustle.

I recently bought this oil blend from Young Living called Highest Potential.  It is designed to increase your capacity to achieve your dreams.  I put it on my wrists everyday as I head out the door and it really is helping my mood.

highestpotential-600x600

Ingredients:

Australian Blue  (which is another YL blend) is stabilizing and inspiring.

Gathering (another  YL blend) helps with overcoming mis-guided energy that takes us away from our focus.

Jasmine essential oil is uplifting and helps with feelings of lost hope and anxiousness.

Ylang Ylang essential oil is extremely balancing to your energies. May help restore confidence.

I know I have my work cut out for me. Saying I will do something and actually doing it are two separate things. But I also know I cannot continue as I am. So my exactly what I needed this weekend was a reality check. Let’s keep the momentum going.
