Relax & Enjoy!

All things in moderation…..

So last year I got in on the essential oil bandwagon. I love them.  I really do.  I now have things in my home like all natural laundry detergent and natural hand soap that have essential oils in it.  I have roller balls of essential oil blends that I wear as perfume or for help with everyday aches and pains. I have an awesome homemade muscle rub cream that I swear melts away my neck tension every night.  But I am also living modern life.  I am a working mom who eats things like Orange Chicken (so delicious) from Panda Express for lunch.  I let my son do things like drink water from the garden hose or eat day old cheerios off the floor.  I also still have a medicine cabinet filled with things like Tylenol and Claritin because you just never know when you will need them.

When I decided to start this website last summer it was to be an outlet for me to write about my new role as a mom and explore this new world of essential oils I was excited about. It was also a creative outlet for me as I grieved the sudden loss of my mom last summer.  And over the past year I have been feeling more comfortable in everything. My son is going to be two in a few weeks and I still love my essential oils.  I also can think about my mom now without dissolving into a pile of grief.  It has been a good year.

But….

There are so many fanatics out there on both the essential oil AND motherhood front.   Sometimes I want to shout, “REALLY?  You really did power yoga, cooked an organic breakfast AND magically healed your sick child from one application of essential oils all before 9 AM?”

The reality of life is that sometimes you feel like super mom and other days you just survive till the kids go to bed. Essential oils have supported my family in an amazing way this year and I love them.  But I also will still take my child to the doctor if he gets really sick.

It is called moderation people. In the end, we are all just trying to make the best decisions for our family while trying to fulfill our dreams and ambitions at the same time.

Now excuse me as I get my 3rd cup of coffee for the day.  It is Friday after all and I am running on fumes at this point.  Moderation in the caffeine department can start tomorrow…

A Day in My Oily Life

Good morning! I thought it would be fun to invite you into my home and show you my typical oil routine. First up -Coffee!! And as I wait for my cup to brew I roll on my wrists some highest potential.

It is a blend of oils that sets my intention for the day. It combines the uplifting and inspirational qualities of Australian Blue with the power of Gathering to help bring greater unity of purpose. Jasmine is added to enhance self-confidence, while ylang ylang calms, soothes, and harmonizes.

Throughout the day it is my reminder to reach higher and think positive. I put a roller filament on the bottle so I just roll on my wrists and neck. I swear I have an extra spring in my step when I use this oil.

Theives Spray

Who else out there has a love/hate relationship with the diaper pail? Lol. To cut down on the smell (and kill germs) when changing out liners I always spray down with the thieves spray. Awesome smell and I love that is all natural and don’t have to worry if Bryces hands go all over this diaper pail later in the day when he decides he wants to throw out his own diaper.  This spray is also great for shopping carts, toilet seats, airplane trays, TV remotes….anywhere there are germs!

Mojito Blend

Hands down my favorite diffuser combo. Peppermint and Lime. Reminds me of mojitos and summer. Try it next time and see for yourself!  I love diffusing my essential oils to make the whole house smell yummy while also benefiting from the aromatherapy.

IMG_2260

Coming in from outside and washing our hands. I LOVE the thieves foaming hand soap. All natural, smells great and isn’t Bryce adorable? Lol. I am lucky that he likes to wash his hands. Even if it means him playing with the faucet for the next 5 minutes. The best part of this hand soap is it is all plant based ingredients and you can purchase a large refill jug that makes it cost effective and is environmentally friendly.

Kid Boo Boo

Bryce fell when he was outside so I used this great rollerball combo on him cleanse and protect the scrap he got on his knee.  This rollerball is so easy to make. Take a glass roller bottle and put 10 drops each lavender and purification or tea tree. Then Just put a little carrier oil in like grape seed to help oils spread when applied. Voila! Diy boo boo stick great for kids but I use all the time too. So convenient!

WorkOut

I have been trying to keep my New Years Resolution to move more and eat less.  I bought the Active and Fit Kit Young Living sells and LOVE both these products. The Cool Azul Sports Gel has 10% essential oils in it and the first ingredient in it is Aloe, making this product moisturizing as well as super cooling to your aching muscles and joints. And the Deep Relief oil works great as an “Icy Hot” type product.  One of my good friends just ran a half marathon and the next day she had no soreness! She swears these products helped her immensely recover from the run.

Lime

Need I say more? A great combo.  Also try adding a few drops of Lime Essential Oil into your fajita’s or Key Lime Pie recipes next time you make them.

Skin Care

My new anti-aging combo.  Frankincense essential oil has helped keep my complexion clear, reducing my age spots and overall giving me a natural “glow.” I mix it with Maracuja Oil, which I love for its lightweight moisturizing properties. Living in Florida my skin doesn’t handle well heavy moisturizers. I find this combo to be working great for me currently.

IMG_2259

Ahhh….Bedtime. I love to put two drops of Valor on my feet before bed. It really helps my mind “shut” down and go to sleep. Thank you for following along with my day and I would love to hear what essential oils you must have in your “oily” day.

If you have not purchased essential oils and are interested in doing so, I recommend the starter kit. It comes with 11 essential oils PLUS a diffuser of your choice. Click here to learn more and purchase!

Good Sleep Good Life

SLEEP…..elusive for many, never enough, and the phrase “sleeping like a baby” is a joke because actual babies wake up A LOT during the night. I should know. My 21 month old is just now sleeping though the night! Lol

Getting more sleep is one of the major reasons I bought my essential oil kit. Bryce had such a hard time calming down at night and my anxiety issues would mean when my head finally did hit the pillow I would just…lay there thinking….totally not sleeping. Anyone with me here? I know I can’t be the only one. So frustrating because I would be SO exhausted yet my mind just would not shut off.

The first thing I did when I got my kit was diffuse lavender that night in Bryce’s room. I also massaged a drop of Lavender on each foot. And a miracle happened. My kid fell asleep. Like in 1/2 the time it normally took. I started thinking maybe there was some truth to this oil thing.

I started looking up essential oil combos for sleep and anxiety and found a lot. Apparently sleep is a popular subject in google land.

I placed another order and tried popular oils like Cedarwood, Lavender and Peace & Calming. Cedarwood and Lavender have been the winners for Bryce. We have made up a roller ball that he applies to his neck every night before bed. Valor has been great for my anxiety and I now fall asleep much faster and more importantly, stay asleep!!

Below are the most popular essential oils for sleep. I encourage you to try as many as you can and find “your” magic sleep combo.

If you are interested in purchasing essential oils I recommend getting Young Living’s Starter Kit because it includes 11 oils PLUS a diffuser.

My January Essential Oils Order

I love when my monthly box arrives. This month I decided to try the Einkorn Spaghetti. We cooked it the night it arrived! It tastes the same to me as regular pasta and it has a nice texture.

This is everything that came in my box this month:

Orange Essential Oil

I love the smell of this one. It also pairs well with a lot of other oils in the diffuser. It is considered a “happy” oil. Who doesn’t like the smell of oranges?

Pine Essential Oil

I grew up in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. I love the smell of pine trees. This oil takes me back to my childhood.

Tea Tree Essential Oil

This oil is good for so much and I actually really like the smell. It is spa like to me. I love diffusing it.

Valor Essential Oil

I use this on my feet every night before I go to bed. 1-2 drops on each foot and I am out like a lightbulb in no time. It is that good.

RC Essential Oil

This Eucalyptus oil blend really helps open up your sinuses. When a cold or allergy hits, this is great to diffuse. I also really like the smell.

Einkorn Flour

This has been a game changer for us. Brian can eat this and not take a gluten hit. We have been using in so many recipes and love the taste.

Einkorn Spaghetti

We loved it and plan to order more. It has more protein than regular spaghetti as well as more vitamins and minerals.

If you are interested in ordering essential oils or getting started with your own essential oil kit, click here to do so. Young Living has a customized monthly box program that gives you reduced shipping rates and gives you 10-20% back in cash! It really is a good deal. Have a great rest of the month everyone!

DIY Bath Bomb Recipe

So over Christmas break I went into a Lush Store. I LOVE their products. But man they are expensive. One bath bomb costs $7! ONE! So I came home determined (after I purchased their dark angel face scrub/wash. Love it) to make my own.

I have to admit I cheated a little bit. I ordered a bath bomb making kit off of Amazon. It came with all of the ingredients pre-measured out and even came with a spray bottle and cute muffin liners. All I had to add was Coconut Oil and my Young Living Essential Oils (I choose Lavender and Lemon this run).

IMG_1961

Tip – half way through I realized the bowl I used was way too small. Here is a pic of me mixing away while my husband is laughing at me getting ingredients all over myself and the kitchen. After this pic was taken we put the mix in our Kitchen Aid mixer and that worked MUCH better.

IMG_1958

I didn’t color these as I didn’t want to use artificial colors. So I left them white. But at the end of the recipe are listed some natural ways you could color them. Get creative!

In the end I think they turned out lovely. I can’t wait to use them! It was so easy to do and I love how you can scent them with essential oils and create the perfect blend for your needs. Here is the recipe and instructions. Enjoy!

Makes 12 (or more) cupcake bath bombs

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Baking Soda
  • 1 Cup Citric Acid
  • 1 Cup Cornstarch
  • 1 Cup Epsom Salt, reserve 2 Tbsp. for topping
  • 5 Tbsp. of Coconut Oil or any other oil to soften skin
  • 1 ½ Tbsp. of water (about 100 spritzes of water)
  • 1 Tsp. or more of Young Living Essential Oils

Directions

  1. Combine the baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch and Epsom salt (set aside 2 Tbsp. for topping) in a bowl.
  2. Slowly drizzle in the oil and mix with hands or whisk until it is evenly combined.
  3. Fill spritzer with water and spritz 100 pumps into the mixture while stirring.
  4. Mix until crumbly. You will know it is ready when you squish the mixture together and it holds together. (see pro tips below)
  5. Stir in essential oils and decorations.
  6. Divide the mixture evenly into 12 parts filling the liner with a generous 1/3 cup of the mixture.
  7. Press down and make even.
  8. Sprinkle on the Epsom salt topping you set aside and press down.
  9. You did it! Dry and set for 2 days.
  10. Drop 1 or 2 bath bombs into a warm bath. Relax your muscles and melt your worries away.

IMG_1965

Pro Tips

  1. Using the right amount of water is the key to making great bath bombs. You want to use the least amount of water, only adding a little at a time, to get your mixture to stick together, but not so much that it becomes active. If it is a humid day use less water.
  2. Organic, cold pressed oils like coconut, olive and walnut oil are natural moisturizers and they nourish the skin. Use them in your bath bombs. If you do not have these handy, no need to fret, any vegetable oil will do too.

Enhancing your Bath Bomb with Natural Color

Unlike artificial food dyes that have no additional benefits, you can enhance the color of your bath bomb with real foods that will actually benefit your skin. Here are some ideas:

Green Tea Matcha

(Sage Green Color) – Clock full of antioxidants that will give you more radiant skin. Add ½ Tbsp. to your mixture before dividing.

Dried Rose Petals

(Decoration) – Tightens pores and restores suppleness to skin. Crumple 2 Tbsp. into mixture before dividing.

Beet Powder

(Red) – Packed will folate, minerals and vitamins, beet powder is a great way to add color while anti-aging qualities fight wrinkles. Mix in 2 Tbsp. before dividing mixture.

Paprika

(Orange) – Rich in carotenes and beta-carotene which prevents age spots and freckles while promoting a brighter complexion. Mix in 2 Tbsp. before dividing mixture.

Spirulina

(Bluish to Greenish) – This super-food contains a wide range of minerals that are important in maintaining great skin, nails and hair. Add 2 Tbsp. into your mixture before dividing.

My November Essential Oils Order

It is hard to believe November is halfway over already.  Yesterday we had our family photo shoot for Christmas Cards and I can’t wait to see the photos.  We found a local photographer who is great with kids and has amazing props.  This year we choose to photograph at a local park and it awesome, but of course there is always hiccups.  For one my munchkin had just woken up from a nap so trying to get him to smile was like pulling teeth.  We probably looked hilarious with all our jumping up and down and waving of the hands to get a 1 year old to show their toothy grin.  Lol

And then I had bought a pair of pants for him and never bothered to try them on before the shoot. Well, they ended up being HUGE on him. So here we are trying to quickly hem tape them and cutting the waist and hem taping that to try and make it work for the shoot. Thankfully everything held but wow the stress…

Which leads me to the purpose of this post.  A bright spot to my weekend was receiving my monthly essential oil order on Saturday.  This month was different though as I didn’t actually order oils.  I decided to try some stuff from their other lines of products.  This month I bought Young Livings hugely popular Ningxia Red juice supplement, their Thieves Cleaner and their Einkorn Flour mix.  Since Brian had such good luck with the Waffle Mix we hoped he wouldn’t react to the pure Einkorn Flour. Read below to see the results of this test.

Ningxia Red

Ningxia Red

As you can see I dug right into the bottle and tried it.  I like it.  Not super sweet, but not so tart that your lips curl.  You only drink 1-2 oz. a day so I drink it like a shot. Some people add a drop or two of extra oils to their juice but for now I will drink it plain.  I am hoping it will help my energy and stamina.  Chasing a 1 year old around is no joke.

Key Benefits:

  • Sustain energy with the combination of select wolfberries and other superfruits. Contains powerful ingredients which are involved in many antioxidant processes and may help prevent against oxidative stress.

    • Delivers citrus essential oils containing d-limonene, a powerful component in citrus oils.

    • Powerful formula includes wolfberry which is touted for its health benefits

Ingredients:

Proprietary NingXia Red Blend: Ningxia Wolfberry Puree (Lycium barbarum), Blueberry Juice Concentrate (Vaccinium corymbosum), Plum Juice Concentrate (Prunus domestica), Cherry Juice Concentrate (Prunus avium), Aronia Juice Concentrate (Aronia melanocarpa), Pomegranate Juice Concentrate (Punica granatum) Proprietary Essential blend 50mg Grape (Vitis vinifera) seed extract, Orange EO (Citrus sinensis), Yuzu EO (Citrus junos), Lemon EO (Citrus limon), Tangerine EO (Citrus reticulata) Other ingredients: Tartaric acid, natural blueberry flavor, pure vanilla extract, malic acid, pectin, sodium benzoate/natural stevia extract.

Thieves-1

Thieves Cleaner

I am hopping on the eco-friendly cleaning bandwagon and trying this.  Which is a big thing for me as I still use bleach and bleach products for the bath and kitchen to kill the “crud”. I am hoping this will convert me away from that.  I bought a pretty cobalt blue bottle from amazon to mix the concentrated cleaner to an all-purpose cleaning ratio.  I really like the smell.  The cinnamon and clove oils in it are great cleaning powerhouses but also smell divine. So much better than the fake overpowering scents from the other cleaning products I normally use.  I also like how it is safe ingredients so I don’t have to worry if I use it around Bryce.

The new Thieves® Household Cleaner has increased cleansing power and an even safer, more sustainable formulation. The new formula contains ingredients from renewable plant and mineral sources, vegetable-based surfactants, and even more Thieves and lemon essential oils for extra cleaning power. Bottle is 100% recyclable.

Ingredients

Water, Alkyl Polyglucoside, Sodium Methyl 2-Sulfolaurate, Disodium 2-Sulfolaurate, Thieves [Eugenia Caryophyllus† (Clove) Bud Oil, Citrus Limon† (Lemon) Peel Oil, Cinnamomum Verum† (Cinnamon) Bark Oil, Eucalyptus Radiata† Leaf Oil, and Rosmarinus Officinalis† (Rosemary) Leaf Oil], Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, and Citrus Limon† (Lemon) Peel Oil.

†100% pure YLTG™ quality essential oil

Einkhorn

Einkorn Flour

We made Cinnamon blueberry muffins with it yesterday.  Really good!  The flavor was very balanced and the dough had a more typical “wheat” feel than what we get with gluten free flours.  Brian ate TWO of them and didn’t have any reaction at all!! Really amazing.  Einkorn has more protein and much lower gluten levels than typical wheat.

Einkorn is the original “staff-of-life” grain, known as the oldest variety of wheat, which dates back to the beginning of time. Einkorn’s natural genetic code and low gluten levels make it a superior choice because of the compatibility with the human body when compared to the modern hybrid wheat of today. Einkorn grain is easier to digest, so nutrients are better absorbed.
