Essential Oils 101

Overwhelmed by what all these oils do and are? Read this section for an overview of some of the most popular oils from Young Living. And remember, just use them! Try them and figure out which ones work for you.

So what in the world is an Essential Oil?

In basic terms it’s an oil from a plant. The oil will come from either the flowers, leaves, wood, bark, roots, seeds, or peel of the plant.

Understanding Essential Oil Chemistry

The power of an essential oil lies in its constituents and their synergy.  Each essential oil is composed of 200-500 different bioconstituents, which make them very diverse in their effects.  No two oils are alike.

Essential oils have a unique ability to penetrate cell membranes and travel throughout the blood and tissues.  The unique lipid-soluble structure of essential oils is very similar to the makeup of our cell membranes, and the molecules of essentials oils are also relatively small, which enhances their ability to penetrate into the cells.  When topically applied to the feet or soft tissue, essential oils can travel throughout the body in a matter of minutes.

So what do these Essential oils do for us?

  • They increase oxygen within our cells, which helps our cells to release toxins.
  • They enhance our immune system.
  • They support our bodies. Depending on which oil it is, they can:
    • Boost stamina and energy
    • Help you relax
    • Help manage stress and anxiety
    • Help reduce the appearance of aging
    • Improve mental clarity
  • And they Promote overall health, vitality, and longevity

Ways to Use Essential Oils

Topically – Essential oils can be applied topically to the skin.  Some oils require dilution with a carrier oil before rubbing them on the skin, such as coconut oil, olive oil, or Young Living’s V-6 blend.  You can apply some oils neat, which means without diluting.

Aromatically – Essential oils can be inhaled from the bottle or diffused in the air with a diffuser.  They can also be dropped on a cotton ball or wet cloth and inhaled.

Internally – Because Young Living essential oils are therapeutic grade, many of them can be used internally and taken orally as a dietary supplement.  ALWAYS read the bottle to see if a specific oil is safe for internal use.  NEVER use a lesser-quality brand of oil internally (the bottle of another brand usually says “Not for internal use!”

Other Oil Information

  • A 15ml bottle of oil contains about 250 drops; a 5ml bottle contains about 80 drops.
  • The body absorbs oils the fastest through inhalation (breathing) and the second fastest through application to the feet or to the ears (outside of the ear – NEVER put oils into the ear).
  • One drop of essential oil can cover every cell in our body with 40,000 molecules.  Start slow, sometimes less is more when it comes to using oils!
  • Putting oils on the feet is a quick way to get them into the body, and this method rarely requires dilution.  Consult a reference book for more information.
  • You can use a warm wet cloth as a compress to drive oils deeper.  Remove when the cloth is cool.

Lavender

Lavender

This is one of the essential oils that I use the most so of course we are going to talk about it first! It is a very gentle oil and safe for most skin types.

1. Sleep and Relaxation

Since I have started using this on Bryce, he falls asleep in 10 minutes vs. 45-50. I put a drop or two on his feet and will also diffuse it at night while we are getting ready for bed. It just works.

You can place a few drops on your pillow, just smell from the bottle, or diffuse. Also great in bathwater.

2. Supports healthy skin

For the support of healthy skin, try a 1 oz salve jar full of a skin oil (like coconut, almond, argan, grapeseed) and add 15-20 drops of lavender. Lavender is great in DIY skin care products because it is so gentle for many skin types and helps renew your skin. Also try on your minor bug bites, burns and cuts. Lavender promotes healing.

3. Butterflies/Nerves

In research, it has been demonstrated that Lavender may be helpful for a normal stress response. Try diffusing it for 3-4 times a day (20 minutes each) or placing a drop or two behind you neck and wrists a few times a day.
